X-Port Paws is a Florida-based 501(c)3 nonprofit.  Our focus is to pull dogs from shelters off the X-lists, which means dogs who are slated to to be killed, because they are too old, too pitie, too black or too behavioral.   Ours is an all-volunteer, non-profit.  We came together to save dogs because there are too many wonderful dogs being destroyed when those dogs were, or still could be, someone’s beloved companion.

About

Most people divide their lives into certain events or milestones, but for me, I refer to the periods in my life based on the dog or dogs that I’ve had at the time. I don’t think that I have ever been without a dog for any length of time in my life.

My love of dogs began with my first dog, a nutty little dog who was mean and even bit me when I was a toddler. Ever since that moment, I have loved dogs.

I began rescuing when I found a dog running down the south bound lanes of the Bronx River Parkway in New York. It’s been over 40 years since then and I don’t even know how many dogs I’ve rescued. Rescue is not a “thing” that I do, it’s who I am. I will continue to save them all until I draw my last breath.

“Tales of the old forest faeries”

I shall
Gather up
All the lost souls
That wander this earth
All the ones that are alone
All the ones that are broken
All the ones that never really fitted in
I shall gather them all up
And together we shall find our home

I had been driving transports for other rescues, when Liz reached out to me over a pit bull in Tennessee named Screech. We worked together to help Screech get out. While he was rescued by another group, Liz and I began rescuing the dogs that no one seemed to care about, the ones at the end of their time.

We’ve made it our mission at XPP to pull the ones that don’t stand a chance of making it out, the ones that are surrendered because their owners need to move ASAP, the ones that are overlooked because they’re blockheads, behavioral, too black, or just too old.

I started out driving transport, donating, and walking dogs, and now I’m doing all that under XPP for the ones that need it most.

Sometimes I have as many as 5 dogs in my house, and not all of them are mine!  I’ve been rescuing for as long as I can remember and I’ll never stop.  I grew up surrounded by animals.

For most of my adult years, I rode horses and competed.  I learned so much about animals through all my years in the ring.  I am blessed to be able to work with rescue partners in trying to find safe places for all the animals we come across.

It’s my goal to make sure that every animal that needs a home, finds a home.

I grew up with dogs and always loved them.  I’m especially drawn to the underdogs, the ones that just can’t seem to catch a break through no fault of their own.  I think I’m a better person when I’m around a dog and I learn a lot about a person by how they are around a dog.  After a long career in public service, I finally had time to do something to help less fortunate animals.  Working with Liz and Michelle, locating new shelter partners, pitching in any way I can, that’s what brings a smile to my face these days.  In a world full of too many sad stories, it makes the most sense to reach out and help the ones that can’t help themselves.  It’s the least I can do.

Growing up I moved to many countries due to my father’s career. As difficult as this was the one constant was the unconditional love and companionship I always received from animals. It is in gratitude to that unwavering love that when I got older I vowed to help animals in need. To that en I have partnered with the wonderful volunteers at xport paws to save once unwanted, neglected, abused etc and make sure they get the medical necessary and ultimately find their forever homes.

Skip Your Latte for a Day FundraiserLittle Mona:  The Pharaoh Hound About 5 months ago, a little red dog ended up in a rural Florida shelter.  Because of her oversized, adorable ears, she was adopted right away.  She had a home for about 5 months.   A few weeks ago,...

The Highway Dogs

The Highway Dogs

Good morning. Yesterday we were heading north to Michigan and when I looked to the right, I saw a brown and white Pittie/Hound mix hanging her head underneath the guard rail. My first thought was, “what a dejected looking dog.” My next thought was,  “Pull...
